More and more people use mobile gadgets to access web content, so the demand for mobile-friendly websites is constantly growing. To fulfill this demand, the body that regulates the generic top-level extensions, ICANN, launched the dot MOBI domain extension in 2005. The first registrations were enabled in September 2006, and the intention behind this TLD is that all websites that use it have to comply with certain regulations. In other words, all .MOBI websites ought to be built to be accessed properly by mobile devices in accordance with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” drawn by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in cooperation with the dot MOBI Registry. These involve how a website is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), and so on.

The regulations have provoked some questions taking into consideration that the universal domain extension is the only one that specifies what devices must be able to access a website and the way in which this should happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a site should be built in such a way as to be viewed by most web browser applications and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
